First off, you might want to buy at least a 700w PSU for a gaming system, just to be safe. Depending on how much you are/aren't going to overclock. Modular power supplies, save a lot of case space also so you don't have to deal with all of the cords, the one you picked is modular tho.

As far as RAM, which I didn't see in your list, I've been hearing good things about G-Skill. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231310 This one is pretty good to be more specific.

Just check around newegg also, they usually have a lot of good deals + rebates. Amazon might be the cheapest tho, since they don't charge tax and shipping. http://www.amazon.com/gp/student/signup/info for free 2-day shipping for 1 year from amazon

Something else to think about too: if its an older HDD you are using, it may not be compatible with newer motherboards. If its one that uses ribbon cables.. then its a no go. Newer boards only take SATA cables. Sad

I helped her throw this stuff together last night. She has a full comp, just the stuff that's on her newegg wish list she couldn't share...or something. It seems like a pretty good system for an ~$800 budget.

I found this RAM (she said she wanted 6GB minimum) but I've never personally used Mushkin http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16820226155

She ordered this HDD last night: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2795126&Sku=TSD-500AAKS

Aaand $17 Lite-On DVD burner etc. etc. Also since factory heatsinks are shit she still needs a hardcore heatsink/fan or at least http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100007&cm_re=arctic_silver-_-35-100-007-_-Product

Do you think she'll need more than 600 watts with only 1 vid card? I'm not sure how much juice quad cores and newer vid cards are pulling.

You'll also need I think 3? case fans Alex.

you will DEFINITELY want a better heatsink, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186134 is the one I use and I love it. Kinda wide though, so might not fit on all boards. Looks like it would be fine on the one you picked though.

Not 100% sure on the Ultra PSU company and I'd stay away from companies like Rosewill unless you're building something in the low-mid range. Here's a decent one but it has a mail-in rebate http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4362115&csid=ITD&body=REBATES Might be worth it to just get the PSU on newegg or amazon for free shipping etc. Modular basically just means that you don't have as many cables all over the place from the PSU. That's achieved by allowing you to change the connectors to whatever you need, instead of just having ALL of them all over. You can get away with non-modular but it would be smart to buy a pack of zip ties and be prepared to do some organizing. You definitely won't need one more heavy duty than 700w with only 1 video card, but if you plan on running 2 or more cards or just future proofing the system in general then you can look at 750+, though it'll get pricey. My comp (core 2 duo e8500 and one 9800GT) has a 750w and I'm confident that I'll be building a new comp far before I'll ever need to upgrade that.

AMD has always been the price conscious route, with a bit of a hit in the performance area. I think right now it's safe to say that that i7 is still the best money vs. power you can buy. You can get an AMD if you want, you'll just need to choose a different mobo. Also I know almost nothing about new AMD CPU's and mobo's so you'll have to ask someone that knows more about them if you go that route.

Here's a good site with CPU, PSU, Vid card, etc. benchmarks that you can do your own comparisons on: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/charts/cpu.php Just make sure you get more than 1 source for reviews and benchmarks.

Edit: I should get that $200 piece of shit for my mom lol. Pretty awesome deal for a non-gaming comp.

Edit 2: You can hold off on the power supply if you can't decide yet. They're not going anywhere and they haven't gotten any cheaper/more expensive in a decade. That's a part worth waiting for a deal on. Same with case, fans, and heat sink/fan.

Only reason i recommended at least a 700w is that its only slightly more expensive than what you were planning to buy, but offers a lot more leeway for future upgrades/overclocking. A 600w or w/e you were planning to buy would be fine for now, but I'm just suggesting a safer route if you plan to upgrade ever in the future.

Ahh yeah, and after looking everywhere, day after day everyhtign si just cheapest on NewEgg, Amazon and even Tiger Direct, only thing I am not keeping an eye on is um Shell Shocker deals or Amazons Daily deal. I dont think ima get much more cheaper than those, until i finish ordering ill just be checking those. Plus i realized later after posting that PSU thingy that the one we chose on new egg has a mail in rebate , lol i guess the mail in rebate date just keeps refreshing cuz it was liek oct 5th now its oct 17th XD.

I do need to find a monitor so maybe that I can get cheap somewhere. Wish there was a frys by me haha. well closer, not gonna ride the train with all those pc things or evn some. lol.

So yeah Ima slowly start to order the stuff, u said id need fans and a heatsink? I saw John post one do those get outdated or anything diff and how do u choose fans, just based on the size?

http://www.frys.com/template/index/

The only important things with a sink is 1) will it fit your mobo/CPU 2) is it good. Look at the reviews and such.

Heh that Fry's site has a 500GB hard drive on its front page Alex. Same price, size, and specs as yours, but it's Seagate.

This PSU is still around http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341018 TigerDirect had the same one for that price after rebate, but not sure who's shipping and tax is cheaper. TBH it's hard as shit to find a great one that doesn't approach $100. Also, PSU reviews seem to be a lot like RAM. Some complain that they die instantly and others say the exact same product is great and has lasted forever. Just luck of the draw I guess? I can't really give a great judgment on it since I've never really had any computer part die except for a PSU (after 5 years of heavy gaming). I just know the brands I've used and that have worked.

You keeping up with all this info? Smile Make a bookmark folder in your Firefox and add Amazon, Newegg, Fry's, TigerDirect, Pricewatch, and any other sites you might find. Just take a gander every day or every other day and try to spot some deals. Designate it your "new comp" folder.

yeah I have been doing allthat and bookmarking. :\ I am gonna stick for the most part with the stuff we (mainly basically you) picked Smile lol. I am gonna order the case today so I have that for the stuff slowly coming in ;s. I want the least probs with the case in the sense that if I get all the parts and something retarded is wrong with the case then yeah cant put it together x_x!

and i was just shown this site o.o

Another good site for deal hunting is http://slickdeals.net/ . Its not only just comp deals but general technology deals as well. People just post stuff that they see for cheap, and they compile it in a nice list on the front page. A lot of good HDD deals tho, if you didnt already buy yours id suggest one of the 2TB drives for under 100 bucks. Actually, probably better off as a storage drive anyways =P I still wanna buy a 10k+rpm HDD, the one i have runs so slow T_T

Oh, forgot to mention too: If you don't have it already, youre going to want a 64-bit version of windows for a gaming comp. The standard (32-bit) windows will only allow you to use 3.5gigs of ram, no matter how much you have. So if you're planning to have 4 gigs or more, you're gonna want 64-bit Windows.

Yeah we talked about her getting 64-bit Windows 7. Supposedly she can get it for free (technically we all can Wink) But yeah 32-bit Windows only allows 4GB of TOTAL memory. All peripheral memory gets assigned to the addresses in that range as well. So if you have a vid card with 1GB of memory, then it'll recognize a max of 3GB system memory.

Since you said you were willing to pay a bit more for your GFX then here are three different GTX 460's I found. The best bang for the sub $250 range.

Great for its price. Just a tad less RAM than the other 2: http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-768-P3-1362-TR-Superclocked-PCI-Express-Graphics/dp/B003V8ATWM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1286583718&sr=1-1

Amazing card, but this and the next get into the pricier range: http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Superclocked-PCI-Express-Graphics/dp/B003ZMTPG0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1286583402&sr=8-1

Never used this company but the hardware review sites like it. Not sure about its durability, etc. Slightly faster than the above: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814261076

well i can get it for free technically because they are not using it as of now but if they did decide to use it id feel obligated to get them if i used their key. So if anyone has a free copy laying around that i can buy for cheap or something LET ME KNOW! lol

Oh and John i keep forgetting to tell u I still have liek 2 psp games of yours >_< I told tom a long time ago and i said i would tell u hahaha should i mail them or something o.o

O and one last thing... If you decide to shop at New egg.... and live in CA they added um... some new fee for recycling, since u cant just throw shit liek monitors out. The funny thign is they sneak the price at the end when u r gonna hit i accept terms and submit. they dont put it in when u put in promo codes or zipcode... SO BEWARE! So now i been shopping at Tiger or Amazon. Like Tiger doesnt have free shipping but doesnt tax us in CA and alot of things have rebates that still make it cheaper or some interesting deals Very Happy!
